Mr. James Gilman Brooks, age 82 of Conyers, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Watson and Lucille Brooks and sister, Katherine Brooks. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha Brooks, Conyers; daughter and son-in-law, Sabrina and Michael Taylor, Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Becky Brooks, McDonough; brother, Miles Brooks, Macon; sisters, Emma Hazel Sharpe, Troy, AL, Annette Brooks, Geneva, AL; grandchildren, Abby Taylor, Rebecca Brooks, James Brooks, III; and great-granddaughter, Bonnie Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a 20-year Veteran of the United States Army serving with the 82nd Airborne Division in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He received a Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Campaign Stars, Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, a Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 60, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, 2 Overseas Bars, a Good Conduct Medal, 3d Award, Meritorious Service Medal, Expert Badge with Rifle Bar M-14, and a Marksman Badge with Pistol Bar 45 during his service. He was a ROTC instructor in Thomaston and also at Russell High School in East Point and had an Associate Degree in Real Estate from DeKalb College. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Scot Ward's Green Meadow Chapel with Bro. Reese Sanders officiating; private interment will be held at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
