Eugene Kelly Thomas, Sr.

Eugene Kelly Thomas, Sr., 88, of Conyers, GA passed away peacefully at home on April 3, 2024. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jozene Thomas, to whom he was married for 58 years. He is survived by his children, Pamela and Robert Boyette of Buchanan, GA, and Kelly Thomas, Jr. of Snellville, GA; his brother, Fred Thomas of Sacramento, CA; granddaughters, Maranda and Lee Biggs and Lindsay and Patrick Hogan, both of Bremen, GA; great-grandchildren, Lola Biggs, Sofia Biggs, Estela Biggs, Porter Hogan, Lennon Hogan, Joseph Hogan; and niece, Sonja Thomas. Mr, Thomas joined the U.S. Navy at age 17, where he served for 4 years from 1952-1956. He was stationed in part on the island of Guam, and became a radioman assigned to the minesweeper, USS Waxwing. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he used his electronic skills and began a career with the phone companies working for Western Electric, Southern Bell, AT&T, and Lucent Technologies until his retirement. After retirement, he worked for several years as an overseas contractor for Lucent Technologies, which allowed he and his wife, Jo, to travel the globe. Mr. Thomas had a special interest and ability in restoring classic automobiles. He fully restored two 1957 Chevrolet Bel Airs, partially restored a 1940 Ford Coupe, and was currently working on restoring a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air. Over the years, he enjoyed attending car shows and belonging to local classic automobile groups. He also enjoyed singing and playing one of his many guitars that he self-taught himself to play, and in recent years, was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 55 for Rockdale and Newton Counties. Mr. Thomas was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Social Circle, GA, where he attended since 1999. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 7, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Scot Ward's Green Meadow Chapel with Pastor Leah Cunningham officiating; interment will follow at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens.
