Hollis Griffin

Hollis Eugene Griffin, 87, of Canton, GA and formerly of Conyers, passed away peacefully Friday, April 26, 2013. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Griffin was born on November 11, 1925, in Holt, GA, the oldest of three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Griffin. After graduating high school in 1942, Mr. Griffin served as a radio operator in the United States Air Corps in World War II. After his service, he graduated from Middle Georgia College in Cochran, GA and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He met his future wife, Betty Jo Butler of Eastman, while attending Middle Georgia College. They married in 1950 and in 2011 celebrated 61 years of marriage, prior to Mrs. Griffin’s death on December 21, 2011. Mr. Griffin worked as an electrical engineer with the Georgia Power Company for over 30 years, designing substations across the state of Georgia. Mr. Griffin was a member of Holly Springs United Methodist Church in Canton. He was a former member of Heritage Hills Baptist Church in Conyers and Glenwood Hills Baptist Church in Lithonia where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Griffin was an avid ham radio operator, helping foreign missionaries communicate with their families back in the United States in the days before e-mail and the Internet. Preceded in death by his wife Betty Jo, Mr. Griffin is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Karen Griffin of Woodstock and Reg and Lori Griffin of Canton; and four grandchildren, Holli Elizabeth Griffin and Emily Lauren Griffin of Canton, and Tyler Jackson Griffin and Zachary Hollis Griffin of Woodstock. He is also survived by his brother, Shirley Griffin of Macon, Georgia. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 5, 2013, 3:00 PM, at Scot Ward's Green Meadow Chapel with Pastor Joe Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home. At the request of the deceased, the body was cremated. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for contributions to be made to Holly Springs United Methodist Church, 2464 Holly Springs Pkwy., Canton, GA 30115.
