James Aevaliotis

James Nicholas Aevaliotis, 74, of Conyers, GA, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 25, 2026, after a brave battle with cancer. Jim-as he was known-was born August 19, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York, to James Charles Aevaliotis and Barbara Dorothea Pfeufer. Raised in Brooklyn and Levittown, Long Island, he received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now the NYU Tandon School of Engineering). Jim's life was an ever-growing web of family, both biological and chosen. Fiercely loving father to Michelle Aevaliotis Vaeth (husband Chris Vaeth), James Carl (JC) Aevaliotis (wife Devon de Mayo), and Denise Kay Warner (nee Aevaliotis, husband David Warner). He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Christy Elaine Aevaliotis (nee Slappey). Christy's beloved daughters became Jim's, Melissa Brook Whitten (nee Collins, husband Deke Whitten) and Chasity Elaine Domingue (nee Collins, husband Tim Domingue). Especially beloved by Jim were his and Christy's grandchildren: Alexandra Jean Vaeth, Demetri James Vaeth, Austin Bryce Greninger, Mackenzie Nichole Greninger, Ty Lucas Greninger, Albert Dale Aevaliotis, Matilda Hope Aevaliotis de Mayo, Alan Lee Whitten, Russell Davey Whitten, Danica Chasity Whitten, Kaley Elaine Domingue, and Timothy Parker Domingue. His siblings survive him, Mary Ann Kosier (nee Aevaliotis, husband Jim Kosier) and John Frederick Aevaliotis (wife Laura Aevaliotis). Jim is also survived by his dear nieces, Kristin Marie Charbel (nee Kosier), Catherine Elizabeth Carter (nee Aevaliotis), and Jamie Nicole Aevaliotis (named after Jim, her godfather). He is also survived by his former wives and loving mothers of his children, Jean Ann Rogers (nee Young) and Bette Louise Aevaliotis (nee Wuertz). He was blessed with a large extended family, much of which survives him: uncle Frederick Pfeufer, aunt Mary Sinkevich (nee Pfeufer), and aunt Helen Bosa (nee Aevaliotis), and eleven cousins. Finally, he is survived by many, many friends that he considered family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his uncles George Aevaliotis and Emmanuel "Sonny" Aevaliotis, his aunt Estelle Steigler (nee Aevaliotis), his cousin Gail Bennett (nee Steigler), and his cousin Donna Barbato (nee Bosa). Jim's life was defined by service. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1973 to 1985, attaining the rank of captain before an honorable discharge. Three of Jim's grandchildren chose to follow in their Papou's footsteps by serving their country, Alex Vaeth in the Air Force, Demetri Vaeth in the Army National Guard, and Austin Greninger in the Army Reserves. Jim loved bragging about these and all his grandchildren and their many accomplishments. His professional life after the Army had many chapters, including engineering for manufacturing, mobile dentistry, and lighting design. He also sold donuts, raised bugs, delivered newspapers, and counted his fellow Georgians (as a 2010 U.S. Census worker). In retirement he was proud to return public service, working as a Rockdale County precinct captain in numerous federal, state, and local elections. A longtime parishioner at St Pius the X Catholic Church, Jim was a man of deep faith and drew comfort from his weekly men's group at the parish, especially through his battle with cancer. Jim loved playing games with friends and family, a scotch on the rocks or a glass of port wine (inexplicably chilled) and following the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs. He was nearly impossible to beat in Scrabble, except by his daughter Denise in an epic upset in one of his final games. He never met a stranger and always had time to chat or to help a neighbor. He would have given anything for a few more moments with the many people he loved, but he filled the time he had with joy and thoughtfulness and an astonishing number of silly jokes. Jim's family would like to thank our many family and friends for their support during Jim's illness, and we would especially like to thank the amazing doctors, nurses, and staff at Northside Hospital, Atlanta Blood Services, the Hope Lodge, and Longleaf Hospice.
