Jeanette Hughes

Martha Jeanette McCuller Hughes of Conyers, GA passed away on Monday, October 29, 2012. Born in Ben Hill County, Fitzgerald, GA on January 21, 1919, she grew up on a farm along with 4 brothers and 1 sister. She graduated from Fitzgerald High School in 1935 at age 16 as Salutatorian of her class. She attended Berry College in Rome, GA where she worked her way to pay for tuition, room and board. When she was a senior at Berry, she met and shook hands with Henry Ford on one of his many visits to the college, as he was Berry's biggest benefactor. She graduated in 1940 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. After graduation, she moved to Atlanta to work in the accounting department of Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Co. In 1941, she married her college sweetheart, Bill Hughes, in Rome, GA. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and she worked at Turner Air Base in Albany, GA. She retired from George A. Pennington & Co. where she worked for 26 years. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling to places in the United States and several European countries. Mrs. Hughes was an active member of Martha Brown Methodist Church in Atlanta, and later, Conyers First United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Maxwell Sunday School Class and Lydia Circle. She is preceded in death by her husband, William J. Hughes, Sr. She is survived by her son, William J. (Jimmy) Hughes, Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Stone Mountain and family, Kim, Mona, Doug and Jay; her daughter, Martha Jean Howard of Lilburn; grandchildren, Alison Glover of Buford, and Richard Howard of Athens; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Scot Ward's Green Meadow Chapel with Dr. John Beyers officiating; interment will follow at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
