Joyce Veronica Greenhill

Joyce Veronica Greenhill was born at sea on June 14, 1932, during her parents' return voyage from Cuba to Jamaica. She was the beloved daughter of George Miller and Naomi Rosetta Hylton of Above Rocks, St. Catherine. Her family lived in Cuba for several years but returned to Jamaica later on. She was the last of 6 siblings. Joyce received her early education at Alpha Girls' School in Kingston. In 1951, she welcomed her only child, Carl Christopher Lewars, who would become the pride and joy of her life. Their close bond remained unbreakable through the years. She began her career in Kingston as a laboratory technician at Kingston Public Hospital before migrating to England in 1961. There, she worked as a conductor on London's iconic red double-decker buses. In 1963, Joyce moved once more - this time to the United States - where she met and married Richard Greenhill. Joyce held positions as a telephone operator at New York Telephone and Merrill Lynch on Wall Street, serving approximately 20 years combined. She later transitioned to working as a ward clerk at Jacobi Hospital until her retirement in 1994. Joyce lived in Bronx, NY, for many years and moved to Covington, GA, when her son and family relocated in 2006. An avid traveler, Joyce explored much of the United States and the world through tours and cruises. Her final international trip was to England in 2013. However, she continued to travel throughout the USA. She had a deep love for music and dancing - if music was playing, she was on the dance floor. Joyce also had a passion for photography, documenting her life through countless albums. She was impeccably organized and took pride in her appearance. A true fashion enthusiast, she loved shopping - whether in malls or via QVC and HSN - and always ensured her outfits were perfectly coordinated, even when she could no longer dress herself. A devoted New York Mets fan, she rarely missed a game. She was also a fierce and competitive domino player; a spirit she carried with her into the nursing facility through Bingo games, where she won many games and left her winnings to her neighbor. Joyce possessed an incredibly sharp memory and remained actively involved in the management of her personal affairs until just a few months before her passing. She was known for her strong will and grace, blended with a great sense of humor. Although her inner circle was small, those fortunate enough to be part of it were deeply loved and cherished by her. She was the last surviving member of both her immediate family and her cherished women's group in New York. Joyce passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Friday, May 16, after going to bed early the night before. Though we knew this day would come, the loss is deeply felt. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience. She is survived by her devoted son, Carl; daughter-in-law, Marjorie; granddaughter, Jasmine; grandson-in-law, Angel; and great-grandchildren, Nolan and Victoria. She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces: Donna Jackson LeBeaux, Jeanette Samuels, Lillett Hayles, and Lorna McLean; nephews: Dave Miller, Austin Miller, and Edgar Miller Jr.; along with many extended family members and dear friends.
