William Almand, Jr.

William Volloney Almand, Jr., age 90 of Conyers, died Monday, April 15, 2024. Mr. Almand is preceded in death by his parents, William and Wilma Almand Sr.; first wife, Gloria; sister, Janet Mauney. He is survived by his wife, Mardee; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Gary; son and daughter-in-law, William III and Susan; brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Sarah Lee; grandchildren and their spouses, William IV and Shannon, Gabrielle and Alex, Ashley, Anne and great-grandchildren, William V 'Liam', and John George. While born in Laurel, Mississippi, Mr. Almand grew up in Conyers, Ga. In 1952 he would graduate from Conyers High School and continue his Education at North Georgia College studying U.S. History and General Studies. During his time at North Georgia, he enlisted in the AROTC for 2 years. Bill then went on to study at the University of Georgia in Athens. While studying there he met his first wife, Gloria, who he was married to for 54 years until her passing in 2010. In the year 1956 after graduating from UGA, Bill was inducted into the United States Army at Fort Benning as a 2nd Lieutenant. He completed 2 tours in Vietnam, earning a Bronze star Medal for "Meritorious Achievement" and being promoted to a Major in 1967. His time in the military developed his love for traveling and seeing the world as he had been stationed all over Europe and in Vietnam. Mr. Almand eventually retired from the Army in 1977 after 20 years of service. Bill was a lively man who had many hobbies and interests; He loved the game of golf and even won 1st place in a Local championship in 2005. He was also a fan of baseball and enjoyed rooting on the Atlanta Braves. Having lived in various climates over the years, Bill and his family developed a love for skiing too. Fishing, horseback riding, and playing Contract Bridge were also amongst the activities that he was very fond of. Of all his hobbies and interests, the most important thing to Bill was his family. A Memorial Graveside service will be held Friday, April 19, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Philadelphia UMC Cemetery with Rick Long and David Collins officiating.
