August 28, 1931 - May 2, 2022
Dorothy Ann Castleberry Hill, 90, of Madison, Georgia passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in the early morning hours of May 2, 2022. The youngest of four, she was born in Greenville, Florida on August 28, 1931 to Marguerite Marshall Castleberry and Christopher Columbus Castleberry. A happy, compassionate, and joyful child, Dorothy was raised in Camilla, Georgia along with her siblings Marjorie, Mary Lou and Walton. From a young age she was the river of compassion, understanding and unconditional love that flowed effortlessly through our family; the existential element that nourished our lives, allowing us to grow and thrive under her protective wing. he underpinning of her existence was also selflessly shared with people she didn't even know. Upon graduation from Camilla High School in 1948, she moved to Atlanta to study nursing at Georgia Baptist Hospital, now part of Mercer University, graduating with her nursing degree in 1951. Soon after moving to Atlanta, she met Jimmie Charles Hill in the commons area of the nursing school dormitories. Jim, a tough and charismatic man, was soon enraptured with her loving nature and tranquil disposition. That balance in their relationship would be the foundation for more than 69 years of marriage. Together they would raise two children, A.D. and Sandra, and build a life predicated on deep love, mutual respect, faith in God, and dedication to family. Dorothy was a life-long, dedicated caregiver to her family. Throughout her life she was a stay-at-home mom to her two children, a devoted and doting grandmother to two grandchildren and primary caretaker to her mother-in-law, father-in-law, mother and sister. She also worked as a nurse in a doctor's offices around the Atlanta area, caring for strangers the way she cared for her family. The profound impact she had on people's lives cannot be understated. She was truly an angelic presence. The void she leaves behind is unfillable, but the magnetism of her existence is still here guiding the needle of our compasses. Dorothy was preceded in death by the love of her life, Jimmie Charles Hill, as well as her parents and three siblings. She is survived by her children, A.D. Hill of Blue Ridge, Georgia; Sandra (Felton) Sandling of Greensboro, Georgia; grandchildren Alan (Alasdair) Raymond-Marshall of Alexandria, Virginia; Alyson (Jay) Parker of Woodstock, Georgia; and great-grandchildren Samantha and Jackson Parker of Woodstock, Georgia. The family would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you and our deepest gratitude to the staff of The Madison Assisted Living facility (on Hancock Street) in Madison, Georgia and Bridgeway Hospice Care for their loving and dignified care of Dorothy during the final months of her life. In lieu of flowers the family would ask that you do as Dorothy would and be kind to those you know and especially those you don't know. We live in a world that Dorothy made better by being in it. Tell people you love them, give them grace even when they don't deserve it, and most of all have compassion for your fellow human. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Scot Ward's Green Meadow Chapel with Pastor Andy McQuaid officiating; interment will follow at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 4, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Condolences may be submitted on-line at www.scotward.com.
