Rev. Dan L. Brokaw

The Reverend Dan Brokaw, beloved Minister of Music and Pastoral Care at Conyers First United Methodist Church for the past 34 years, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Coe Brokaw and Raymond E. Brokaw. He is survived by his aunts, Rose Brokaw of Mansfield, Ohio and Jean Brokaw of Bellville, Ohio. Mr. Brokaw was born on May 30, 1948 in Mansfield, Ohio. He lived in communities in North Carolina and California while growing up and graduated from Griffin (GA) High School in 1965. Dan was educated and attended Reinhardt College and graduated from West Georgia College where he earned a Master's degree in Music. He later earned a Master's degree in Theology from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Following his undergraduate work Dan served in the United States Navy and was stationed for a time at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He also was a member of the Admiral's Band and played in the U.S. Navy Show Band. After being discharged from the Navy, Reverend Brokaw began his music ministry at Casselberry Community United Methodist Church in Casselberry, FL. He began his service at Conyers FUMC on May 1, 1978. Since that time he has become a well-known member of the Conyers Community. Dan was known for his exceptional talent in the realm of spiritual and holy music and produced and lead innumerable concerts, cantatas, and musical productions. The members of his church especially remember his work with youth and children and the annual Passion Plays he produced during the Easter season over the years. Reverend Brokaw considered the congregation of Conyers First United Methodist to be his family as he spent most of his adult life in faithful service to the church and her people. CFUMC Senior Pastor John Beyers in a published statement said of Reverend Brokaw, "Each of us is a better person as a result of Dan's long and faithful ministry among us. You are all his cherished and beloved family. Together we share in the great loss of a man of faith who truly loved Conyers First United Methodist Church". A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Conyers First United Methodist Church with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens. Friends will be received Sunday, September 16, 2012 from 2 until 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
