Ethel Mercer Joiner

Ethel Mercer Joiner went to be with her Lord on July 27, 2022. She was born in Washington, N.C. to the late Judge Linwood and Elsie Mercer. She graduated class of 1956 from Washington High School where she served as president of the Beta Club her senior year, treasurer of her senior and junior class, and participated in Tri High Y Club, marching band, and drama club. She received her BA and MA degrees from East Carolina University and taught elementary grades in North Carolina and Florida and Cobb, Rockdale, and Newton counties in Georgia. She was a member of Conyers First United Methodist Church, where for many years she sang in the Chancel Choir, participated in youth and charitable events, and was a member of The Maxwell Sunday School Class, serving as song leader. She was a member of the 54 and More Club, bridge club, and her special social group the Yarnspinners. She was a long-time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as Regent of the Col. John McIntosh Chapter in Conyers. She received a national award for co-authoring the song "George Washington's Man", which was presented to her at the National DAR Headquarters in Washington D.C. She was an avid reader and enjoyed reading and writing poetry. She loved her flowers and hummingbirds, trips to the North Georgia Mountains and to the beach. Most of all; she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband Don and their four children: Don Jr., Beth (Bill) Brunton, Andrew Joiner, David (Amy) Joiner; her grandchildren, Dr. Andrew Brunton, Christopher Brunton, Amanda (Jason) Spruill, Benjamin (Kelsey) Joiner, Dominic Parris; her great-grandchildren, Leland Joiner and Madeleine Spruill. In addition, she is survived by her nieces and their families in N.C., Sarah Massey (Eric), Nancy Johnson (Greg), Becky Alves (Antonio); cousins, Mary Lou Chandler and Dr. Jim Applewhite, all of whom she cherished greatly. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Linwood E. Mercer, Jr. The family acknowledges, with grateful appreciation, personal caregiver Jill Key and the staff of Sacred Journey Hospice. Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 3:00 PM at Conyers First United Methodist with Pastor Chris Shurtz and Dr. Jim Martin officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, August 27, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the church. Private interment will follow at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
