Harold Lee Moss

Harold Moss of Buckhead, Georgia, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025. Born August 24, 1923, to James Carlton and Ada Moss, he was 101 years old. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Mark Johnson, and grandchildren, Scott (Katy) Johnson, Christopher (Kimberly) Johnson, Rebecca (Joshua) Plunkett, Melissa (Rusty) Jessup. His great-grandchildren are Cassidy Mickle, Ada Johnson, Hudson Johnson, William Johnson, Mason Plunkett, Jeffrey Plunkett, Lincoln Plunkett. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ada McGee Moss (1930), father, James Carlton Moss (1968); wife, Frances Spears Moss (2002); Brothers, James Carlton Moss, Jr (1933), Emory Clay Moss (1992); nephew, Emory Clay Moss, Jr (2003). Harold was a member of Martha Brown United Methodist Church in East Atlanta, for 49 years serving in many roles before moving to Lithonia, GA and joining and serving at Kelley's Chapel United Methodist Church. Most recently, he was a member of Madison First United Methodist Church in Madison, GA where he continued his teaching and serving. He graduated from Commercial High School in Atlanta in 1940. He worked at Atlantic Steel until he was drafted in 1943 to serve during WWII as a radio operator in a B-17. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he attended Emory University, becoming a Math and Science teacher. He later attended the University of Georgia to earn a Specialist Degree in Education. Mr. Moss was an educator for 33 years, who enjoyed teaching and touching on the lives of his students in Clayton County, then later in the Atlanta Public Schools. The last 15 years were spent serving as principal at Benteen Elementary School. He and Frances retired to Buckhead, GA in 1993 to fish, garden, and travel. They had wonderful relationships with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren who visited and stayed with them often, teaching them to garden, fish, and play cards. A Celebration of Life will be held at Scot Ward Funeral Home in Conyers, GA on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 12 noon. Visitation will be held from 10:00-12:00 AM, immediately before the service. The service will be live streamed at scotward.com/tributes. Call 770-483-7216 for streaming information. Burial with Masonic Ceremony at Melwood Cemetery at 2:30 pm for those wishing to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shriner's Children's Hospital, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
