Michael Dean Crotts

Former State Senator Michael Dean Crotts (Mike), 75 years old, from McDonough, GA; passed away suddenly, at his home early on Saturday morning, July 9, 2022. Mike was proud to have served in the Georgia Senate for twelve years, unopposed. He retired as the ranking senator and vice-chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus. Mike was a highly respected leader and his tenure in public office included serving on prestigious and influential standing senate committees such as Appropriations, Banking and Financial Institutions, Insurance and Labor, Reapportionment, Transportation, and Ethics. Mike spearheaded a number of important pieces of legislation which have become the benchmark for similar laws in other states. Born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 19, 1947 to Dallas Thurman Crotts, a WWII veteran and Margaret Elizabeth Crotts, who both preceded him in death. The family moved to Decatur, GA where he attended Toney and Wesley Chapel Elementary Schools; Southwest DeKalb High School, Class of '65, where he excelled as an athlete in football and baseball. His choice for college was DeKalb where he received an Associate Degree; then joined the Coast Guard and valiantly served in the military during the Viet Nam War. In addition to his notable political career, Mike was a very successful entrepreneur having earned the distinction of becoming the youngest real estate broker in Georgia; that's still upheld to this day. He was owner of Crotts Realty, a commercial real estate business. Mike is survived by his wife, Phyllis who celebrated 52 years of marriage, his son Caleb of Covington, Caleb's wife, Kerri, his four grandchildren: Carson, Caeden, Rylee, and Axton. His only sibling, brother Dex T. Crotts of Atlanta, Dex's wife, Ann and their son, Alan Crotts, Alan's wife, Rosemary, their daughters, Diana and Sarah. Nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, whom he loved and was very proud of every one. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Scot Ward's Green Meadow Chapel with Bishop Duane Swilley officiating; family will receive friends from 12 until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
