Sara McLeod

Sara Nell Goldin McLeod, wife of 46 years to the late John Blake McLeod, Sr. died at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Emory Hospice in Atlanta, Georgia. Sara McLeod was born on November 21, 1926 in Draketown, GA to the late W.B. Goldin and the late Eula Goldin. Sara reminisced with her family about skating on Capitol Avenue. She vividly remembers being sent to the Capitol as a small tyke to take Governor Talmadge homemade sausage and ham from her parents who owned a country ham store on Capitol Avenue. Her children recall her expressive story telling of the train that would deliver her daddy’s reorders for the store and her excitement when he would tell her of a hat delivery because she knew she would be allowed to choose the first hat in each delivery which explains her love of hats as she was lovingly known as “The Hat Lady” at Mt. Carmel Christian Church. Sara was the President of Ladies Auxiliary #65 Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 72 and a member of The Harvesters Bible Class at Mt. Carmel Christian Church and The V.F.W. Auxiliary. Sara volunteered at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home in Atlanta, Georgia by playing the piano and organ for 74 years as she began volunteering in 1939. Her vivid memory of 1939 was attending the premier of Gone with the Wind starring Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. In 1992 Sara was the recipient of 11 Alive’s Community Service Award for her service. Sara also volunteered at Callanwald and Asa Candler’s Home and a VIP volunteer at the Peachtree Road Race for 30 years in Atlanta, Georgia. Sara sang in the Billy Graham Crusade choir and has been remembered by many Decatur, Ga. residents for 25 years of employment with DeKalb County Police Dept. as a crossing guard for DeKalb County Schools in the 70’s and 80’s. Sara is survived by six children, John Blake (Sandra) McLeod, Sr., William Jerome McLeod, Carroll McLeod (Mike) Burns, Charles Brewster McLeod, Mark (Elisa) McLeod, Lacy Heather McLeod and her brother Jim (Carol) Goldin. Sara is the Grandmother to: Debbie, Sherrie, Mac and Brandon Blake McLeod, Jack Conoly, Jr., Joseph Burns, Heather Blake Greer, Amber Kristine McAllister, Andrew, Sarah, Jackie and Mitzi McLeod, Christy Gilbert, Jay Thompson, Todd MacLeod and Nora Berry. Sara is the Great Grandmother to Logan, Zoe, Addison, Ryker and Bodi Conoly, Benjamin Blake Greer, Tyler, Garrison and Brooks Gilbert, Anna, Paul and John Thompson, Leah Brennan, Alexis Gouldie and Cadence Berry. Sara McLeod’s creed was “You can only take with you what you give away in this life.” Sara stood firm on the foundation of The Holy Bible and her favorite scriptures were Philippians 1:3, Philippians 4:13 and Romans 8:28. Our Mom, Mama, Memaw, Granny and The Hat Lady is also described with generosity, wit, and southern charm wrapped up with a fruitcake and a gallon of homemade pickles will be greatly missed by family and friends. Because of the Grace of God we know that she is in heaven with her beloved husband. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Christian Church with Brewster McLeod and Art Stansberry officiating; interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta. Family will receive friends Friday, December 27, 2013 from 4 until 8 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, Sara requested that donations be made to Mt. Carmel Christian Church.
