Tommy L. Moon

Tommy Moon, 73, of Conyers, Georgia, passed away on July 8, 2026, at Emory University Hospital due to an unforeseen complication following a stem cell transplant as part of his treatment for leukemia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gwenell and Kyle Moon; his brothers, Keith Moon and Tony Moon; and his sister, Janet Moon. Born on December 20, 1952, Tommy grew up in Union Point, Georgia. He began working at just 11 years old at the local Dairy Bar, where he learned early that hard work would become a defining part of his life. Tommy graduated from Greene County High School, where he was a standout athlete. He was the starting center on the legendary 1970 "The 19 of Greene" football team and, the following year, became the starting quarterback, earning the fitting nickname "Moonshot". After high school, Tommy worked several jobs before joining the United States Army in 1975. After basic training, he was sent to the Army's Academy of Health Sciences at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas working in clinical chemistry at the base hospital. Next, he served as a Medical Laboratory Technician at Martin Army Hospital at Fort Benning, Georgia. It was there that he discovered his passion for golf. Through dedication and countless hours of practice, he earned a place on the All-American Army Golf Team, representing Fort Benning in 1978 and 1979. Following his military service, Tommy used his GI Bill benefits to enroll in the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Apprentice Program, beginning a career that would impact countless golfers. In 1986, Tommy and his family moved to Conyers, where he became Head Golf Professional /Manager at Honey Creek Golf and Country Club. For 23 years, he built not only a successful career but also a reputation for mentoring and inspiring junior golfers. In 2010, he accepted the position of General Manager and Golf Director at Cherokee Run Golf Club, where he retired in 2020. Tommy is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 50 years, Nancy Thornton Moon; his children, Justin Moon (Stephanie) and Holly Rosenberg (David); and his treasured grandchildren, Silas, Evie, and Isla Moon, and Ruby and Banks Rosenberg. He is also survived by his brother, Buddy Moon (Kathy); his sister, Debbie Moon Hubbard (Dean); and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Tommy loved the Atlanta Braves, the Georgia Bulldogs, and spending time with the many friends and golfing buddies he made throughout his life. More than anything, he loved being a "PawPaw" to his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his incredible work ethic, and the lasting impact he made on so many lives, both on and off the golf course. His legacy will live on in the family he loved, the friendships he treasured, and the countless people he encouraged, taught, and inspired. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
